the valentine museum
The Valentine is a museum in Richmond, Virginia, dedicated to preserving the history of the city.
INSIGHT: There is no greater sense of justice than using an unjust force against itself.
IDEA: Using the empty pedestals of the Confederacy to celebrate People of Color.
reset in stone
In June 2020,
Richmond took down symbols of oppression from their pedestals,
to end the glorification of injustice.
All that was left were empty pedestals
and unfinished business.
We took the very symbol of White Supremacy,
and turned it on its head
to celebrate People of Color.
Viewing the pedestals through our app,
you see symbols of Richmond’s iconic People of Color
and learn about their contributions to the city.
So here’s to reminding ourselves
that no unjust law. norm. or system is ever set in stone
even if it is.
